Merit Awards for Mature Students
July 2014. I have just finshed teaching a Kaawai Raupapa course for Te Wananga o Aotearoa. It was 18 weeks, comprising 5 weekend noho. 24 students successfully completed the course stage one of a mural that has been entered in to a Resene National Mural competition. Awesome students. The Whanau Komiti of Kaikohe Intermediate approached Te Wananga o Aotearoa and Te Puni Kokiri to assist with resourcing an initiative to compliment the “Ma te Iwi” – “It Takes A Village To Raise A Child” programme that operates within the school. It is aimed at bringing the community together. These novice students have formed themselves into an informal group called “He Huarahi” and will be exhibiting their art work from Thursday 8th August 2014 at Passion8 gallery in Kaikohe. Three of these students are the maturest in the group and have produced some innovative pieces, which are being exhibited tonight. These 3 kuia received Merit awards at the Taitokerau business awards in July. These women bring a quality to the classroom environment, their Taha Wairua, wisdom, aroha and manaaki. Semester A finished ready for semester B now.
