Kings Theatre Creative Opening in Kawakawa
Kawakawa now has a wonderful new arts space and creative team to support arts in Te Taitokerau.
Kings Theatre opened its doors in 1936 as the ‘Showcase of the Bay of Islands’ screening movies and creating entertainment and memories until 1976. The Theatre was then converted to a clothing store, second-hand-mart and most recently a kids play area. Now the new owner, Laurell Pratt and a creative team hope to transform the theatre back into a showcase, not just of the Bay of Islands, but for Tai Tokerau art, environment and culture. Connecting East & West as the creative and cultural junction of the Far North District of New Zealand. A welcome to the essence of Northland and a place to connect with yourself, each other, the past, the future, the whenua and the wairua.
Part of the inside has been renovated to a large gallery space and the outside has been repainted thanks to Laurell’s wonderful and hardworking father. This is just the beginning as the plan is to upgrade and renovate the entire building. It’s a wonderful community driven project that has bought life back to an historic building that many locals have fond memories of. As part of the creative team I am looking forward to future events, projects, workshops and ventures that will follow. This is an after pic
